We’re breaking down the NYC Democratic mayoral primary!
Andrew Cuomo brought the weather from his home in hell with him to NYC and lost his big race on the hottest day of the year.
Don’t cry because it’s Cuomover
It’s a good day when we can close the book on not one but TWO sexual predators. And — knock on wood — yesterday might have been that day, as former New York governor Andrew Cuomo got walloped in the NYC mayoral primary, and also, the prosecution rested their case against Sean Combs. The headliner of the day was undeniably Zohran Mamdani, who was polling in the single digits a few months ago, only to pull off a stunning victory over the former-governor-sex-pest-nepo-baby Cuomo. We’ll get into all of that today, as well as updates on Iran, Jeff Bezos’ wedding change-up, Dermot Mulroney, Matt Gaetz, and more.
Zohran for NYC
If your timeline is anything like mine, it’s pretty stoked right now. As I’m sure you’ve heard, 33-year-old Democratic Socialist Zohran Mamdani walloped the 67-year-old moderate Andrew Cuomo in the NYC Democratic mayoral primary. While the race isn’t technically over, Cuomo already conceded to Mamdani….so yeah, it’s Cuomover. And I’m as excited as anyone – Cuomo is a serial sexual predator who resigned in disgrace and covered up the deaths of thousands of elderly people who died because of his COVID policies. Zohran, for his part, ran a campaign focused on affordability, with key policies including freezing the rent, free buses, affordable childcare, and municipal grocery stores. While his campaign wasn’t without controversy – in the week before the election, he got a ton of blowback for declining to condemn the phrase “globalize the intifada” (I listened to the full interview, and I’ll admit it wasn’t a great moment for him) – at least he had a campaign. Cuomo barely campaigned at all, instead relying on his millionaire and billionaire donors to handle the whole thing. How entitled do you have to be to feel like you don’t need to put in any effort to run…all of New York City?
The question is what happens next. In normal years, the winner of the Democratic primary is the de facto new mayor, since NYC is overwhelmingly Big D. This year, things could be a bit rockier since disgraced current mayor Eric Adams plans to run as an independent. And Cuomo hasn’t ruled out a third-party run, either. The Republican candidate is Curtis Sliwa, head of the vigilante group Guardian Angels and member of the Perv Busters (Google it). He’s not a serious candidate, but neither is Adams IMO. Still, while Mamdani is the clear frontrunner heading into the general, I expect more drama in the months to come.
But there’s an even bigger question: what does this mean for the future of the Democratic Party? As Politico reported this morning: “[Zohran] marks a stunning victory for the left flank of a fractured party still searching for direction after last November’s presidential defeat, boosting the voices demanding a more radical policy platform to take on Donald Trump’s GOP.” I don’t really think of affordable childcare as all that “radical,” but I guess some people do? And indeed, many establishment Dems – Michael Bloomberg, Bill Clinton, Jim Clyburn – tried to stop Zohran. But they failed, likely because of Zohran’s ability to galvanize young voters, including men. The Democratic Party just invested $20 million in figuring out how to win back young men, so I hope they try to learn from our new nominee. If they don’t, though, I can’t judge them – I, too, have never really understood men. Read more.
Trump’s curse
Trump was in such a bad mood yesterday that he dropped the F-bomb on national television. Many were horrified, but personally, I prefer that to him dropping real bombs, which he also tends to do. Here’s the latest on the US’s role in the Iran-Israel conflict:
A new poll found 56% of Americans disapproved of Trump launching strikes on Iran.
The New York Times reported that a study found the attacks on Iran only set their nuclear program back a few months, which is…slightly less than the Trump Administration has been promising. I believe their term was “completely destroyed.”
In response, Secretary of State Marco Rubio (among other Trump officials) denied the results of this report. Well, lying for Trump is his job.
But in happier news, the ceasefire appears to be holding between Iran and Israel. I’m keeping all my fingers crossed. Read more.
“McDonald’s and Krispy Kreme are ending their partnership after only a few months of working together, after – and you’re really not going to believe this – Krispy Kreme implicated McDonald’s in the Epstein files.”
Combs prosecutors rest their case
Time flies when you’re too distracted by war to focus on criminal sexual abusers. But in case you missed it, the Sean Combs trial is nearing an end. Yesterday, the prosecution rested their case against Combs, who has been charged with sex trafficking, conspiracy to commit racketeering, and transportation to engage in prostitution. In total, they brought in 34 witnesses, including several women who’d been involved romantically with Combs.
Meanwhile, Combs’ defense also rested its case. This doesn’t mean much, since they called no witnesses. Nothing screams, “I didn’t engage in human trafficking,” like having nobody who can vouch for you not engaging in human trafficking. To be fair, it’s not unusual for the defense not to call witnesses – the burden of proof lies with the prosecution, so it’s technically enough for the defense to lie around and say, “I didn’t do it, I’m just a wittle baby.” However, in this case, Combs’ lawyers had indicated that they planned to call up to three witnesses, so the move was something of a surprise. But this means that after about six weeks of testimony, closing arguments are expected tomorrow. After that, the jury – eight men and four women – will deliberate. And after THAT, he gets convicted and then begs Trump for a pardon (I assume). Read more.
ON OUR RADAR
Dermot Mulroney has filed for divorce from his wife Prima Apollinaare. Time for him to finally try to make things work with Julia Roberts??
WNBA franchises have increased in value by an average of 180% since last year. Woooo. Should we drop the ‘W’ and start referring to the other league as the MNBA?
Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez had to change their wedding venue because of protesters mad that he doesn’t pay taxes. I’ll take the W.
According to a whistleblower from the Department of Justice, one of their top lawyers, Emil Bove (pictured with Stephen Miller, but 20 years after his wife left him), instructed staff that they might need to ignore court orders and deport people illegally. I’m gonna be real with you, this is the least surprising leak I’ve ever heard. I would be more shocked if a whistleblower revealed that the DOJ bathrooms sometimes ran out of toilet paper.
Matt Gaetz is having a baby. Oof.
Yesterday was the hottest day in over a decade in much of the East Coast. We got a few more days left of this heat wave, so please hydrate, my friends!

Three sexual predators! Anthony Weiner lost too.
“Cuomover” is about the finest portmanteau I’ve seen in many months. Brava!
